ABOUT
Tunisia's Water Strategy by 2050
Context:
Tunisia is an arid country with limited water resources. Water stress is a growing reality due to a combination of factors:
- Climate change: Decreased rainfall and increased evapotranspiration.
- Population growth: Increased demand for drinking water and agricultural water.
- Pollution: Deterioration of water quality.
Objectives of the strategy:
- Secure water availability: Increase water resources mobilization and improve water use efficiency.
- Aim to guarantee 115 liters of water per day per inhabitant.
- Currently, water resources are only 420 m3 per year per inhabitant.
- Tunisia is one of the countries in the world in a situation of water stress.
- Improve water quality: Combat pollution and protect water resources.
- Promote integrated water resources management: Involve all stakeholders in water management. Improve the efficiency of drinking water and irrigation networks to recover 300 million m3.
- Water Allocation:
- Reduce water for agriculture from 80% to 70%.
- 30% for domestic consumption, tourism and industry
- National water demand is expected to increase by 38% by 2050.
- Water resources are expected to continue to decrease to -28%.
Focus & Project
Focus areas:
- Water resources mobilization:
- Construction of new dams and reservoirs.
- Desalination of seawater.
- Wastewater reuse.
- Improving water use efficiency:
- Modernization of irrigation systems.
- Raising awareness among the population about the rational use of water.
- Water resources protection:
- Combating water pollution.
- Protecting groundwater recharge zones.

- Involving local actors in water management.
Projects and Measures:
- 43 projects and 1200 measures.
- Water Storage: Build 31 dams and other underground structures by 2050.
- Wastewater: Reuse 600 million m3 of wastewater in agriculture by 2050.
Strategy financing and ...
Funding:
- Requires 70 billion dinars or 2.7 billion dinars per year.
Strategy financing:
The strategy is estimated to cost around 100 billion Tunisian dinars. Financial resources will be mobilized through:
- The state budget.
- The private sector.
- International donors.
Monitoring and evaluation:
A monitoring and evaluation system will be put in place to measure the progress of the strategy and its impact on the water situation in Tunisia.
Conclusion:
The Water Strategy by 2050 is an important document that aims to ensure Tunisia's water security. Its implementation will help meet the challenges of climate change and population growth and ensure a sustainable future for Tunisia.
