Carbon Mitigation Initiatives in Mauritania's Energy Sector
Green Hydrogen Exploration:
- BP's Commitment: BP has pledged to explore the large-scale production of green hydrogen in Mauritania.
- Government Collaboration: This initiative is part of a broader agreement with the Mauritanian government.
- Renewable Energy Focus: The project aims to utilize renewable energy sources to produce hydrogen, thereby reducing dependence on fossil fuels and enhancing carbon mitigation efforts.
This exploration into green hydrogen represents a significant step towards diversifying Mauritania's energy resources and aligning with global trends in renewable energy and carbon reduction.
ABOUT US
BP and Mauritania Collaboration:
BP has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Mauritania to explore the potential for large-scale green hydrogen production in the country.
This agreement was signed at the COP27 climate conference and underscores a shared commitment to renewable energy projects (BP) (Offshore Energy).
Focus on Renewable Resources:
The initiative aims to leverage Mauritania's renewable resources, particularly wind and solar, to produce green hydrogen.
BP plans to conduct studies to assess the availability and quality of these resources in northwest Mauritania,
which could potentially lead to a production capacity of up to 30 gigawatts, translating to 2 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen (Hydrogen Central).
ABOUT US
Long-term Development and Infrastructure:
The project is envisioned as part of a long-term development strategy that includes subsequent phases focused on building electrolysis plants and hydrogen export infrastructure, enhancing Mauritania’s role in the global energy transition towards low-carbon solutions (Hydrogen Central).
Integration with Existing Energy Projects:
This green hydrogen initiative is part of BP's broader strategy in Mauritania, which also includes the development of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 liquefied natural gas project.
This project, straddling the border between Mauritania and Senegal, is expected to produce about 2.3 million tonnes of LNG per year and is part of BP's commitment to diversifying its energy portfolio in the region (gasworld).
This green hydrogen project represents a significant step for Mauritania, positioning it as a potential leader in renewable energy in Africa, while aligning with global efforts to transition towards more sustainable energy sources.
